Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
dust jacket - book cover project
Concept project of a dust jacket for a chosen book created in 2019 as a part of a work submission during my Bachelor’s degree.
Inspired by a fantasy book by Lewis Carroll “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” I have designed a dreamy like design for the dust jacket.
The illustration has been created on 300g paper using watercolour paints and an ink pen.
Later edited in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
The dust jacket has never been printed out, it only exists in a digital version and in a form of a mock-up.
The idea of the final design has been evolving. First I decided to show much less characters, create something much more simple and figurative. At the same time follow the earlier used commercial creations. From the very beginning I wanted to use the technique of watercolour, however simultaneously connect it with a strong black outline and highly saturated colour scheme. The design however felt like its lacking something. The illustrations were simple and there was nothing that was making them unique and eye catching. I wanted the viewer to be able to imagine the story and from first impression have an urge to open the book, read and to see other illustrations that could be hidden inside.
Inspired by multiple watercolour illustrators and by the bizarre world created by L. Carroll I have decided to keep the illustration in a colourful, bright colour scheme, use soft lines and almost sketchy-like style of a drawn line. The elements of the story are clearly depicted in the illustration, however I decided to imagine the characters according to my own vision.
The book is addressed to a younger publicity , which is why I decided to underline the children friendly character of the story. I have used pale, soft colours instead of dark, almost scary concept - that earlier has been used by other illustrators. Watercolour brush strokes and candy like rose-pink base colour give however the impression of light, great dream in which everything I possible.
While creating the design I have as well focused on a layout , used font and text alignment. I wanted the text to be positioned in a way that would visually correspond with the images chosen and graphic symbols such as indication of the printing press etc.
